An apartment described as wheelchair accessible may still have a difficult gate, an unreliable lift or a bathroom that does not suit the person using it. Check the full journey with your own equipment and requirements, rather than relying on a single listing label.
Start with the person, not the label
"Accessible" is too broad to establish whether a particular apartment works for you. A person using a manual chair, a powered chair or assistance may need different clearances, slopes and transfer space. Write down your non-negotiable movements before viewing: arriving from the street, entering the building, reaching the unit and using the bathroom and kitchen.
Follow the route from outside
Look at the actual route from the road or parking place through the gate, compound, entrance and unit door. Ask about steps, uneven paving, drainage channels, thresholds and gates that may be difficult to open. If there is a ramp, check its surface, width and how it joins the landing with your own mobility needs in mind. A photograph of the front door alone says little about the rest of the route.
Test doors, turns and everyday use
Measure openings and turning areas that matter to your chair rather than relying on an agent's estimate. Check how doors swing, whether furniture can be moved, and whether the chair can reach a bed, sink and cooking area. In the bathroom, look at the route to the toilet and shower, transfer space, floor level and any grab support. A feature that looks suitable in a listing photo may be unusable in practice.
Ask what happens when the lift is unavailable
For an upstairs apartment, view the lift itself and ask residents or management about outages, maintenance and backup power. Learn what alternative route exists if the lift stops. Do not assume that a ground-floor entrance makes an upper-floor flat accessible. If access depends on a temporary arrangement, find out who maintains it and whether it will remain available.
View with your actual equipment
Where possible, attend with the chair and any support person you normally use. Move through the full route, open the doors and test the spaces at a normal pace. If a live visit is impossible, ask for a measured walkthrough, but have a trusted person verify the details before committing. Record any promised modifications in writing and confirm who would do them. Do not infer compliance or suitability solely from a listing label.
Keep this check separate from general condition
The property inspection checklist covers structure, utilities and documents for any home. Your access check answers a different question: can you use this particular route and apartment safely and comfortably with your own equipment? A qualified access professional can help when adaptation or a complex route is involved.
