Lugbe to the city centre is one road: Airport Road, officially the Umaru Musa Yar'Adua Expressway, which links central Abuja with Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. From Lugbe you travel towards the city past the roadside communities of Chika and Kuchingoro, reach the City Gate and the national stadium, and continue into Garki, the Central Area or Wuse. Lugbe is in Abuja Municipal Area Council, the same area council as the centre, and there is no practical alternative road. The expressway is slow into the city in the morning and slow back towards Lugbe in the evening.
The route, stage by stage
- Your estate to Airport Road. Lugbe lies on both sides of the expressway and is usually described by estate name or as Lugbe North, South, Central, East and West. Homes close to the road walk to the bus stop; homes deep inside need a keke or a motorcycle first, and some estate roads are untarred.
- Joining the expressway. Airport Road has service lanes beside its main carriageways. You normally join a service lane first and then move onto the main carriageway. If your estate is on the far side, you will need a crossing point or a turn further along, so find out where yours is.
- The Lugbe bus stops. The frontage carries shops, banks, fuel stations and the mall, and the main bus stops, such as Car Wash and Police Signboard, are where most passengers board.
- Chika and Kuchingoro. Between Lugbe and the city the road passes a line of roadside communities, with pedestrians crossing and buses stopping.
- The City Gate and the national stadium. The expressway enters the city at the City Gate, with the national stadium beside it.
- Into the districts. From the City Gate the city roads lead to Garki and Area 1, the Central Area and the Federal Secretariat, and on to Wuse and Maitama. Offices in Garki are the closest; Maitama and Wuse 2 add a further stretch across the city.
The choke points
- The Lugbe bus stops: stopping buses and taxis, passengers crossing and estate traffic joining.
- Service-lane merges: the points where vehicles move between the service lanes and the main carriageway slow both.
- The City Gate end: where the expressway traffic meets the city road network and divides for Garki, the Central Area and Wuse.
- Airport traffic: official convoys and travellers hurrying for flights use the same road, and an accident on a fast stretch can hold up the whole line.
Transport options
- Shared taxis and minibuses: the most common option. They run “along” Airport Road from the Lugbe bus stops to the usual city drop-off points, such as Area 1, the Federal Secretariat, Berger and Wuse Market. You may need a second vehicle for the last leg.
- High-capacity buses: large buses also work the corridor at peak times and are the cheapest seat.
- Keke and motorcycle taxis: these serve the streets behind the expressway for the first and last stretch. They do not operate in the city centre.
- Driving: gives you control of the estate leg and the last leg inside the city. Car-sharing with colleagues is common.
- Ride-hailing: available, and useful outside the peaks. Avoid unmarked cars offering lifts at night; use registered taxis or an app.
- Rail: the Abuja light rail has a line between the city and the airport, but it does not follow Airport Road through Lugbe, so it is not a practical option for most residents. Check the current stations and services if you live close to one.
How peak direction works
The flow is tidal. In the morning Airport Road carries commuters into the city from Lugbe and from further out: Kuje, Gwagwalada and the communities on the airport side all feed onto it before it reaches Lugbe. In the evening it reverses. Civil service hours make the peaks sharp and predictable, so leaving a little before the rush makes a real difference. People who work at the airport, or along the corridor on the airport side, travel against the main flow and have a far easier road, which is one reason Lugbe is popular with airport and airline staff.

Lugbe gives you an address inside Abuja Municipal Area Council at a fraction of the central rent. To make the commute workable:
- Ask which side of Airport Road the property is on and how far it is from the expressway. The answer changes both the price and the daily trip.
- Test the full trip, door to desk, at your real departure time on a working day, and test the return.
- Visit after rain and look at the estate road, not only the house.
- Ask about power, water and the service charge, which differ from estate to estate.
