Leaving and your caution deposit

How to get your caution deposit back

The short answer

After you leave, the host checks the home and gives the deposit back. If they have not after 14 days (two weeks), ask us.

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Open your stay after you check out.

  2. Step 2: Find the card "Caution deposit".

  3. Step 3: Read what it says.

If it says "Deposit being checked", your host is checking the home. If it says "Deposit returned", it is on its way back to you.

  4. Step 4: Press "Request caution release" if 14 days have passed.

You can only do this if your host has not settled the deposit yet. Add a note in "Anything our team should know (optional)" if you like.

  5. Step 5: Let our team take it from there.

Our team releases your deposit, unless your host raises a dispute first.

What is a caution deposit?

It is money you pay in case something gets damaged. Some people call it a caution fee.

The host sets the amount. You pay it once, with your booking. Discounts never make it smaller.

The lines on the card

The line"Deposit paid"What it meansWhat you paid.
The line"Kept by the host"What it meansWhat the host keeps. Only our team can agree to this.
The line"Back to you"What it meansWhat comes back to you.

Can the host keep my deposit?

Not on their own. A host can only keep some of it if our team decides so.

If your host thinks something was damaged, they raise a dispute. See what to do if your host disputes your deposit.

Asked too early?

You see "You can ask for your caution deposit back 14 days after check-out." Wait, then try again.

How the money comes back

The Cabans team sends it back to the card or account you paid with.

The card says "Refunds reach you within 14 days, usually in about 5."

Pressing "Approve payment" does not change your deposit. It is settled on its own.
