Abule Egba to Ikeja is one road: the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, inbound towards Oshodi. From Abule Egba you pass Ile Epo, Iyana Ipaja, Dopemu, Cement and Mangoro, and get off at Ikeja Along, the stop for Ikeja. The Oshodi to Abule Egba BRT corridor runs along the same expressway and starts at Abule Egba, which makes this one of the better-served commutes on the western mainland. The road is slow towards Ikeja in the morning and towards Abule Egba in the evening.
The route, road by road
- Your street to the expressway. Homes in Abule Egba sit on the streets behind the expressway, on both sides. Tricycles and motorcycles serve the inner streets, and some of those streets are rough in the wet.
- Abule Egba junction. A flyover carries through traffic over the junction; the bus stops, the BRT terminal and the market are below it.
- Ile Epo. The market at Oke-Odo spills towards the road and slows the inbound side.
- Iyana Ipaja. The major interchange of the western mainland, where Ipaja Road brings in traffic from Ipaja and Ayobo and a large motor park loads buses. See the Iyana Ipaja area guide.
- Dopemu, Cement and Mangoro. A run of busy bus stops and junctions serving Dopemu, Agege and the streets on either side.
- Ikeja Along. The stop for Ikeja on the expressway. From here you cross into Ikeja itself: Computer Village is close by, and Obafemi Awolowo Way, Allen Avenue, Alausa and Ikeja GRA are a short local trip further on.
If your office is on the far side of Ikeja, for example in Alausa, Oregun or around Opebi, the last local leg inside Ikeja matters as much as the expressway. Ikeja's own roads are congested through the working day.
The choke points
- Abule Egba junction: market activity, bus stops and traffic arriving from Ijaiye, Meiran, Alagbado and Sango Ota.
- Ile Epo: roadside trading narrows the usable carriageway.
- Iyana Ipaja: the single biggest merge on the route.
- Dopemu and Cement: stopping buses and turning traffic.
- Ikeja Along: buses stop, passengers cross and vehicles turn into Ikeja, all at one point.
Transport options
- BRT: the Oshodi to Abule Egba Bus Rapid Transit corridor runs along the expressway, with its terminal at Abule Egba. Buses use a dedicated lane for much of the way, which is the main reason to prefer them at peak times. Expect queues at the terminal in the morning rush.
- Danfo and korope minibuses: frequent, and they call at Ikeja Along on their way to Oshodi. They share the general lanes.
- Rail from Agege: the Lagos Red Line has stations at Agege and Ikeja. Roads on the eastern side of Abule Egba lead to Agege, so a bus or tricycle to Agege followed by the train is an option for some streets. Check the current timetable first.
- Ride-hailing: available, and most useful outside the peaks or for the local leg inside Ikeja.
- Driving: gives flexibility, but you sit in the general lanes while the BRT passes, and parking in central Ikeja is tight.
How peak direction works
The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway collects commuters from a very wide area: Abule Egba itself, the communities north of it, and the Sango Ota side of Ogun State. In the morning that load all moves inbound, towards Ikeja and Oshodi, and the slow points above join up. In the evening it reverses, and the outbound side is heavy from Ikeja Along back through Iyana Ipaja. The people who manage it best leave before the rush, use the BRT lane, or work hours that miss the peaks.
What it means for where you rent
- In Abule Egba, the indicative annual rent for a 2-bedroom flat is ₦180,000–₦500,000.
- In Ikeja, the indicative annual rent for a 2-bedroom flat is ₦1,200,000–₦3,500,000.
That gap is why so many people who work in Ikeja live along this expressway. To make it work:
- Choose a street with a short, passable walk or tricycle ride to the BRT terminal or a main bus stop. A cheap flat deep inside adds a second commute to the first.
- Stay far enough from the junction and the market to sleep; homes beside them are loud from early morning.
- Inspect the street after rain, because lower streets can flood.
- Test the full trip, door to desk, at your real departure time on a working day, and test the return.
- If the budget stretches, compare Iyana Ipaja, Dopemu and Agege, which remove part of the road.
