For an Abuja trip of three nights or more, a shortlet can give you more space for the money, a kitchen and a quieter base. A hotel wins for one-night stays, conferences held at the hotel, and trips where you want daily cleaning and a front desk. The right choice depends on how long you stay, how many of you there are, and what the trip is for.
This guide compares the two point by point, for Abuja. It gives no prices, because they change with the season and the street. Instead, it shows you how to compare the full cost for your own dates.
The quick answer
| Your trip | Usually the better fit |
|---|---|
| One night, arriving late and leaving early | Hotel |
| A conference or event held at a hotel | Hotel |
| A business trip of three nights or more | Shortlet |
| A family or a group of friends or colleagues | Shortlet |
| A month on a posting, or while you look for a home | Shortlet or serviced apartment |
| You want meals, cleaning and a front desk every day | Hotel or serviced apartment |
A serviced apartment sits between the two: a furnished flat with some hotel-style services. See serviced apartments in Abuja, and our guide to serviced apartment vs hotel.
Space and privacy
A hotel room is one room with a bathroom. A shortlet is a whole home: bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and sometimes a balcony or a compound. For two or more people, that space changes the trip.
- Families get separate bedrooms, and a place to cook for children.
- Colleagues can share a two- or three-bedroom flat and still have their own rooms.
- Long stays feel less like living out of a suitcase.
Privacy works differently too. A hotel has a lobby, staff and other guests around you. A shortlet in a quiet part of Maitama, Asokoro or Gwarinpa feels more like a home. Some Abuja shortlets sit in estates or compounds with a gate and a guard, so ask about security before you book.

Price over a weekend and a week
Hotels and shortlets price in different ways. So compare the full total for your dates, never the headline night price.
| What you pay for | Hotel | Shortlet |
|---|---|---|
| The stay | A price per room, per night | A price for the whole home, per night |
| Taxes and charges | Sometimes added on top of the room rate; ask for the full total | Ask what the total includes before you pay |
| Cleaning | Included, usually daily | Often a one-off cleaning fee for the stay |
| Caution deposit | Some hotels ask for one at check-in | Hosts may ask for one; it is refundable after you leave |
| Longer stays | Sometimes a weekly or company rate | Some hosts offer a discount for longer stays |
| Food | Restaurant and room service | You can cook; some hosts sell breakfast or meals as extras |
Here is a fair way to compare. It takes about ten minutes.
- Pick your exact dates: first a weekend, Friday to Sunday, then a full week.
- For the hotel, ask for the total for those nights, with every tax and charge included.
- For the shortlet, add the nights, the cleaning fee and any other charge. Leave out the refundable caution deposit, but make sure you can pay it.
- Divide each total by the number of people who will sleep there.
- Add what you expect to spend on meals and rides from each place.
Two things are worth checking. A cleaning fee weighs more on a weekend than on a week, because it is paid once. And a shortlet shared by three or four people can cost less per person than three or four hotel rooms. Check this against your own numbers, because prices move with the season and with big events in the city.

On Cabans, pick your dates on a bookable shortlet and the “Price Breakdown” appears. It shows the nights, any discount, the “Cleaning fee”, the “Caution deposit (refundable)” and the “Total”, all worked out by Cabans. You pay securely online through Paystack. Paystack’s processing fee is added when you pay, and you see it before you pay. That fee is not refunded. See how to check dates and the price for a stay.
Deposits and cancellation
Hotels handle deposits in different ways. Some take cash or a transfer at check-in. Others hold an amount on your card and release it after you leave. Ask when you book what the deposit is, what it covers and when it comes back. Our guide to the caution fee in a hotel vs a shortlet explains both.
Cancellation rules vary as well. A hotel rate may be flexible or non-refundable, and the cheapest rate is often the one you cannot cancel. Shortlet hosts set their own terms. Before you pay anywhere, find out three things:
- until when you can cancel for free;
- how much comes back if you cancel;
- how long a refund takes.
On Cabans, every bookable shortlet has free cancellation up to a time the host chooses, such as 2 days before check-in. Cancel before then and you get back 100% of what you paid for the stay, cleaning fee and caution deposit included. Paystack’s fee is not refunded. The exact deadline shows before you pay. If that time has already passed when you book, the stay cannot be cancelled, and you are told so before you pay. Refunds reach you within 14 days at most, and usually in about 5 days.
Services
Hotels win on services. A good hotel gives you daily housekeeping, a front desk day and night, a restaurant and room service. Some also have a gym or a pool.
A shortlet gives you a kitchen, a living room and the freedom to come and go. Services vary from home to home. Some hosts arrange cleaning during the stay, airport pick-ups or breakfast. Others leave you to it. Ask about:
- backup power, and whether it runs the air conditioning;
- water supply and hot water;
- Wi-Fi speed, if you need to work;
- cleaning and fresh towels during a longer stay;
- security at the gate or compound.
Our guide to what comes with a shortlet lists the questions to ask a host.
On Cabans, once your host completes your check-in, your stay page has “Stay services”. Use it to ask for fresh towels, a cleaner, or help with something that is not working. Some hosts also sell extras, such as bottled water or breakfast, delivered to your stay.
Getting around and arriving
Abuja is a planned city with wide roads, and its districts are spread out. Expect to get around by ride-hailing app or taxi rather than on foot. That makes where you stay matter as much as what you stay in.
Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport sits well outside the city centre, so allow plenty of time for the drive. Some hotels run an airport shuttle. Some shortlet hosts can arrange a pick-up, so ask before you travel and agree the price in advance.
If you arrive late, a hotel’s front desk is usually open all night. With a shortlet, agree your arrival time and how you will get in before you set off.
Which to choose
Choose a hotel if you are in Abuja for one night, or your meetings are in the hotel. A hotel also suits you if you want every meal made for you, or you land very late and want a front desk waiting.
Choose a shortlet if you are staying three nights or more, or travelling as a family or group. It also suits you if you want to cook, or need a quiet place to work between meetings. Base yourself near where you will spend your days. Where to stay in Abuja matches areas to trips.

Frequently asked questions
Is a shortlet cheaper than a hotel in Abuja?
It depends on how long you stay and how many of you there are. Compare the full total for your dates, divided by the number of people. A one-off cleaning fee weighs more on a short stay, and a shared shortlet can cost less per person than several hotel rooms.
Is a shortlet or a hotel better for a business trip to Abuja?
For one night, or a conference held at a hotel, a hotel is usually simpler. For three nights or more, a shortlet gives you a kitchen, a living room and a quiet place to work. Stay close to where your meetings are.
Do Abuja shortlets have 24-hour power?
Not all of them. Hosts may cover grid outages with a generator, an inverter, solar panels or a mix. Ask the host what runs on backup, for how many hours, and whether it powers the air conditioning.
Can I stay in an Abuja shortlet for one night?
Sometimes. Each host sets a minimum stay, and some accept one night while others ask for two or more. Check the listing before you plan around it.
Is a serviced apartment the same as a shortlet?
They are close. Both are furnished homes you rent by the night, week or month. A serviced apartment adds hotel-style services, such as cleaning or a reception desk. A shortlet may have fewer services, so ask what is included.
Which areas of Abuja are good for a shortlet?
Maitama and Asokoro are quiet and close to government and diplomatic offices. Wuse 2 is busy, with restaurants and offices. Garki is central. Gwarinpa is a large residential district with bigger homes. Choose the area nearest to where you will spend your days.
Can I book an Abuja shortlet online on Cabans?
Yes, on listings that take online bookings: they show a booking box with a calendar and the full price. You pay securely online through Paystack. Paystack’s processing fee is added when you pay, and you see it before you pay; it is not refunded. Every bookable shortlet has free cancellation up to a deadline shown before you pay, and refunds reach you within 14 days at most, usually in about 5 days.
