A hotel's headline room rate is often not the whole bill. Many Nigerian hotels add taxes and a service charge on top, and some show them only at check-out. Before you compare, ask the hotel for the total for your dates, with every tax and charge included.
Then add what the room does not give you. With no kitchen, every meal is bought. Laundry is usually charged per item. And if you need more than one room for a family or a team, the cost multiplies.
What a shortlet total includes
When you book a shortlet online on Cabans, the booking box does the sum for you before you pay:
- The nights. One line for each run of nights at the same price. Busy dates can cost more.
- Any discount. A longer-stay discount or free nights, if the host offers them. You get whichever saves you more.
- Any cleaning fee. A fixed amount, once per stay.
- Any caution deposit. A fixed, refundable amount, once per stay.
Paystack's payment fee is added when you pay, and you see it first. Ask the host anything the listing does not say, such as whether diesel for the generator is included.

Booking, paying and cancelling: how they differ
Paying
A shortlet booked on Cabans is paid online, in naira, through Paystack, when you book. Press "Reserve" first and we hold your dates for 30 minutes (half an hour) while you pay. Never pay for an online booking by transfer straight to a host. Hotels vary: some charge when you book, others at check-in or check-out.
Confirming
Homes marked "Instant booking" are confirmed as soon as you pay. Others are marked "Host confirms": the host has a set time to accept, and if they decline or do not answer, you get a full refund.
Cancelling
Each shortlet has a free-cancellation time chosen by the host, from 24 hours to 30 days before check-in, and you see the exact deadline before you pay. Cancel in time and you get back 100% of your booking, caution deposit included. Paystack’s payment fee is not refunded. Refunds reach you within 14 days at most, usually in about 5 days. The deposit
A shortlet caution deposit is refundable. After you leave, the host checks the home and releases it. If the host says something was damaged, the Cabans team looks at both sides before anything is kept.
Arriving and your codes
There is no front desk. When you get there, tap "I have arrived" on your stay page. The host hands over the keys and completes your check-in. Your door code and Wi-Fi password then appear on your stay page. They are never emailed.
When shortlets win clearly
- Stays of three nights or longer. The value gap grows with every night, especially where a host offers a longer-stay discount.
- Families and groups. One apartment with several bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room usually beats several hotel rooms.
